Vishwakarma Puja is performed to show reverence to Lord Vishwakarma. According to the Hindu scriptures, he is the one of the fourteen 'valuable' things that came out of the Samudra Manthan. He possesses the talent of creating cities and weapons and is therefore called the 'Devashilpi' or the 'Divine Carpenter'. The Vishwakarma Day is recognised as the day after Diwali in the Eastern, Central and Southern states of India. It is celebrated as Vishwakarma Jayanti by craftsmen as well as industrial workers.

Hindu texts have suggested that Lord Vishwakarma is the only architect of all the worlds. He is believed to have created the greatest weapons of war that were used by the Gods themselves. One story suggests that this 'Divine Architect' also built the towns of Indraprastha, Hastinapur, Sone Ki Lanka, and the City of Dwarka, among others. The importance behind worshipping Lord Vishwakarma is not just to celebrate his artistic creations, but also how he used the science of industry to create. The function of which is immensely important to humankind. It is a way of showing gratitude for conferring talents on humans so that they have a means to earn their livelihood. While the name might not seem common, he is highly revered among the working class. It is also the time where all the 'tools of trade' are cleaned and worshipped.

The Vishwakarma Pooja is generally done at the end of Diwali. This is a day of celebration for factory workers and shopkeepers who take this occasion to do a Puja for growth in work.
